HF equipped aircraft can be connected to any telephone subscriber in the global telephone network through STO Radio.
These phone patches are often used whenever the need arises for consultation by direct voice communication between Flight Crews and Ground facilities or vice versa.
Ideally a customer provides us with details of the phone numbers of each of the company’s focal points, those numbers are stored in our computer system and auto-dialled which allows for quicker and error-free transactions on the air.
As presented under SELCAL, we encourage crews to always establish contact with us when operating within our Service Area and remain on SELCAL guard throughout the flight.
It is our recommendation that crews perform things in an orderly sequence, i.e. contact with us should have been established and maintained prior to the time when a problem on board requires making a call. Chances are the actual problem onboard could be aggravated by the time consumed over the question of how to establish contact with ground. That question should never be an issue - it should be part of the Standard Procedure.
